Turnings on Edges

By Alysha Herrmann

Last month I said I’d talk about the ‘turning point’ for me in learning to love and accept my body. But I actually told a bit of a fib. That’s not *exactly* what I’m going to share. I can’t talk about the turning point, because I didn’t win the war with my body.

My body is not a static, unchanging experience.

My body has grown two children. It has fluctuated in dress size, in fitness, in muscle tone, in appearance. I have new scars, freckles and moles. My dress sense has changed as my life (and confidence) has changed. My hair colour and style is an ongoing party.

How do you define beautiful? (Lauren Moss)

At the beginning of this year, the Skin Deep team introduced the campaign ‘Stunning Sunday’ – the day of the week where we encourage everyone to nominate somebody special in their lives and recognise why it is that they are beautiful. It’s a strictly bikini/speedos/looks free zone…the day is all about what’s going on inside!

If I’m strong now, it’s because she showed me how to be.

Stunning Sunday

So warm and fuzzy huh? It’s important to share that the idea for Stunning Sunday came from something very real that we all have to deal with across the country in mainstream media. I got chatting with a young woman I’ve known for a long time about the ‘bikini babes’ who grace the pages of the newspaper every Sunday in our community. There’s a little paragraph about what they do but the focus is the huge picture of them in a park or on the beach in their bikini.

Compassionate, wonderful and kind. She would do anything for anyone, just because she wants to help.

While we’re not going to put a stop to this, we do think it’s important to change the focus…so we’re giving people an alternative! When you read some of the quotes, which kind of beautiful would you rather put your energy into being?

[she is] giving voices to so many beautiful individuals who may otherwise not have shared their stories.

So have a think about nominating the beautiful people in your life. See you over on the Skin Deep Facebook page every Sunday!
